Not enough TRX to send USDT?

Straight answer: at TronTransfer you can pay the network fee in USDT, so your TRX balance can stay at 0 — as long as your wallet is already activated on TRON (it has received TRX at some point) and holds enough USDT for the amount plus the fee. A normal wallet on its own can’t send USDT (TRC-20) with zero TRX, because every TRON transaction needs some TRX or energy. If you can get a little TRX, paying the fee in TRX is cheaper. Here’s why, how much you need, and your options.
Why USDT needs TRX in the first place
USDT on TRON is a smart contract, and running it uses energy. If you haven’t staked TRX for energy, the network burns your TRX to pay for it: about 6.5 TRX (~$2.26) to a wallet that already holds USDT, and about 13.1 TRX to a brand-new one. If your TRX balance is lower than that, the transfer fails with “out of energy”.
How much TRX you need, by method
1. Send it yourself (burn TRX)
~6.5 TRXThe default. Your wallet burns ~6.5 TRX of energy plus a little bandwidth per transfer (~13.1 TRX to a new wallet). No setup, but it’s the most expensive way and you pay it every time.
2. Stake (freeze) TRX for free energy
thousands of TRXCheapest long-term — if you already hold a lot of TRX. Staked TRX earns energy every day, but one transfer’s worth of daily energy takes several thousand staked TRX, locked for about two weeks when you unstake. Great for heavy senders; overkill for occasional ones.
3. Rent energy yourself
TRX + setupCheaper per transfer, more steps. Energy marketplaces rent you energy for TRX, usually with a minimum order or an account. You still need TRX in your wallet to pay for the rental.
4. Use TronTransferEasiest
~5.48 TRXOne flat fee, no setup. TronTransfer sponsors the energy your transfer needs, so instead of burning ~6.5 TRX you pay a flat fee of about 5.48 TRX (~$1.81), about 10.76 TRX to a brand-new wallet. Keep about 1 TRX extra in the wallet as a buffer. It’s non-custodial (your USDT stays in your wallet until you approve), there’s no sign-up, and every recipient gets a free scam-address check.
5. Pay the fee in USDT with TronTransfer
fee in USDTFor when you hold USDT but not enough TRX. In the app, set “Pay the network fee in” to USDT. You approve 2 prompts in your own wallet: the USDT fee, then your transfer. TronTransfer supplies the network energy and bandwidth, so your TRX balance can stay at 0. Your wallet must already be activated on TRON and hold enough USDT for the amount plus the fee. The USDT fee is higher than the TRX fee in option 4 — it’s a convenience — and the exact amount is shown before you confirm.
So — how much TRX should you keep?
Sending USDT now and then? Keep roughly 5.48 TRX + 1 TRX per transfer and send it with TronTransfer for ~$1.81, instead of burning ~$2.26.
Don’t want to keep TRX at all? Pay the fee in USDT in the app: your TRX can stay at 0 (your wallet must already be activated on TRON), for a higher fee than paying in TRX.
Sending USDT many times a day? Then staking TRX for your own energy can be worth it — see the cheapest way to send USDT.

Frequently asked questions
Can I send USDT on TRON without any TRX?
Yes, at TronTransfer, if your wallet is already activated on TRON: pay the network fee in USDT and your TRX balance can stay at 0. You approve 2 prompts in your own wallet (the USDT fee, then your transfer) and need enough USDT for the amount plus the fee. Paying the fee in TRX is cheaper. A normal wallet on its own can’t send USDT with zero TRX, because every TRON transaction needs TRX or energy; exchange withdrawals also work, because the exchange pays.
How much TRX do I need to send USDT?
About 6.5 TRX (plus a little bandwidth) if you send it yourself, or a flat ~5.48 TRX with TronTransfer plus ~1 TRX buffer. Sending to a wallet that has never held USDT costs about twice as much either way.
Should I swap USDT to TRX for gas?
You don’t have to: at TronTransfer you can pay the fee in USDT instead (your wallet must already be activated on TRON). Swapping or buying just enough TRX for the fee makes each transfer cheaper. You don’t need to stake or rent energy for an occasional transfer.
