How much TRX do you need to send USDT?

Updated October 28, 2026 · numbers refresh automatically with live network prices

Short answer: with no staked or rented energy, keep about 6.5 TRX for the energy of a transfer to an address that already holds USDT, plus about 0.35 TRX of bandwidth, and about 13.1 TRX of energy to an address that has never held USDT. With rented energy through TronTransfer you need the fee, about 5.48 TRX, plus about 1 TRX as a buffer.

USDT on TRON is a smart-contract token, so every transfer is paid for in two network resources: energy and bandwidth. If your wallet doesn't have them, the network burns TRX to buy them. That's why a USDT transfer needs TRX even though you're sending USDT.

Why the amount changes

The TRX you need is energy used × the network's energy price. A transfer to an address that already holds USDT uses about 65,000 energy; one to an address that has never held USDT uses about 131,000, because the USDT contract has to create a new balance entry. The energy price is set by TRON governance and currently stands at 100 sun per energy (1 TRX = 1,000,000 sun). See TRON energy explained.

Not enough TRX?

Don't send with too little: a transfer that runs out of energy fails, your USDT stays put, and the TRX it burned is not refunded (why failed transfers still cost TRX). Top up a few TRX first, or see your options when you're short of TRX.

Alternative: have 0 TRX? Pay the fee in USDT instead

In the TronTransfer app you can pay the network fee in USDT: you approve 2 prompts in your own wallet (the USDT fee, then your transfer), TronTransfer supplies the energy and bandwidth, and your TRX balance can stay at 0. Your wallet must already be activated on TRON (any wallet that has ever received TRX) and hold enough USDT for the amount plus the fee. The USDT fee is higher than the TRX fee in the table above and is shown before you confirm.

Frequently asked questions

Can I send USDT with 0 TRX?

Yes, at TronTransfer, if your wallet is already activated on TRON: pay the network fee in USDT and your TRX balance can stay at 0. You need enough USDT for the amount plus the fee, which is shown before you confirm; paying the fee in TRX is cheaper. A normal wallet on its own can't: every USDT transfer on TRON needs energy and bandwidth, and if you have none the network burns TRX to pay for them.

What happens if I don't have enough TRX?

Most wallets refuse to send. If the transaction is sent anyway, it can fail with OUT_OF_ENERGY: your USDT stays where it is, but the TRX burned for the attempt is not refunded.

Why does sending to a new address need more TRX?

An address that has never held USDT needs a new storage slot in the USDT contract, so the transfer uses about 131,000 energy instead of about 65,000, roughly double the TRX.
